Hi, I'm Jorge

Allow me to introduce myself.

About me...

Hi, I’m Jorge, a designer, researcher and curator eager to connect the worlds of creativity, tech, culture and academia.

Most of the time, I am working for the Fontys University of Applied Sciences as Lector/Professor of Applied Sciences, with the research chair “Media, Interaction and Storytelling”. Among other tasks, I lead the FutureMediaLab and all R&D lines associated (experience design in public space, smart environments, impact of creative industries in society, change and transformative practices, design for social innovation and automated storytelling).

Furthermore, I am currently wrapping up my PhD in Responsive Environments at the Eindhoven University of Technology, working together with Caroline Hummels as my promoter and inspiration.

As a master graduate of Communication Design at University of Lisbon, and having completed my post-master at HOWEST in Multimedia Communication Systems, I pride myself in my storytelling ability across various media platforms. This was especially reflected in my early projects such as 2Times Ann, which was showed at the Berlin Film Festival in 2012. My ongoing Ph.D work in Experience Design in Interactive Environments at the Eindhoven University of Technology has led to several publications and extended my design perspective beyond that of the studio.

At STRP, I combined my business and curative skills in setting up the STRP Biennale – one of the largest creative technology festivals of Europe. What I love about STRP is that the work there brings people of different interests together, with the ultimate goal of connecting technologically driven artistic manifestations with a general audience.

Passing on what you’ve learned to the next generation of creatives is important to me, and so I teach both at Fontys and the TU/e. At the Fontys Future Media Labs I teach minor students on the art and science of media storytelling and investigating its future. At the university I teach courses such as the Design for Social Interaction elective and act as a guiding coach or student projects.

At the Designhuis, I curated exhibitions, workshops and fashion shows. Having the role of creative director and as its establisher I ran the building to facilitate those in need of a space to meetup and create new artistic and design oriented projects. Recent events I helped to organize include ArtEZ’s graduation show and the Stad in Beweging exhibition.

In my personal life I am quite prominent in the gay community. You can read about my contribution to Portugal’s gay marriage legalization in my stories here. In Eindhoven I have co-hosted and organised a series of STUK X parties, bringing together the city’s wild side. Champagne for everyone!

Bottom line: Working at STRP, TU/e, Fontys and Designhuis in bringing together the right people to work with and create value for the future, with the occasional gay party hosting on the side. 🙂

“By bringing together people of different backgrounds, creativity and innovation become inclusive. That inclusion connects design with people, and makes design a societal matter.”
